Garden Tool Sharpening — Derby & Derbyshire
Give your garden tools the edge they deserve
Blunt secateurs, loppers, and spades don't just make gardening harder — they damage your plants and put strain on your hands. Mickleover Sharpening restores your garden tools to their best, quickly and affordably, with drop-off, collection, and postal options available across Derby.

A sharp blade cuts cleanly through stems and branches, leaving a smooth wound that heals quickly and is less prone to disease. Blunt tools crush and tear plant tissue, stressing the plant and leaving ragged cuts that invite rot and infection. Sharpening your tools regularly is one of the most effective things you can do for your garden's health — and for your own comfort while using them.

The Spa Treatment — for tools that need more than a sharpen
Garden tools that have been stored outside or left damp often need more than just a new edge.
Rust removal & oil — The Spa Treatment
Rust and oxidisation build up on garden tools over time, especially if they've been stored over winter. Our Spa Treatment removes surface rust, cleans and conditions the metal, and applies a protective oil coating — leaving your tools looking and performing like new. Perfect to combine with a sharpen at the start of the gardening season.

Common questions
Garden tool sharpening FAQs
Answers to the questions we hear most from gardeners in Derby and Derbyshire.
How often should I have my garden tools sharpened?
For most home gardeners, once or twice a year is ideal — typically at the start of spring before the busy season, and again in autumn. If you're a keen or professional gardener using your tools heavily, more frequent sharpening will keep performance at its best.
Can you sharpen tools that are very rusty or in poor condition?
In most cases, yes. Surface rust is removed as part of our standard sharpening process for garden tools. For heavily rusted or neglected tools, we'd recommend adding our Spa Treatment (rust removal and oil) for £5, which restores the metal and protects it going forward. Send us a photo and we'll let you know what's achievable.
Do you sharpen both bypass and anvil secateurs?
Yes — we sharpen both types. Bypass secateurs have two blades that pass each other like scissors and we sharpen the cutting blade. Anvil secateurs have a single blade that closes against a flat plate, and we sharpen that blade. If you're not sure which type you have, just send us a photo.
Is it worth sharpening old garden tools rather than replacing them?
Almost always, yes. Older hand-forged tools in particular are often made from higher quality steel than modern budget alternatives. A good sharpen at £10 will restore years of useful life to a quality tool, whereas a cheap replacement may blunt again quickly. If a tool is beyond saving we'll always tell you honestly.
Do you cover Derby and the surrounding Derbyshire area?
Yes — we offer drop-off and collection services across Derby, Mickleover, Littleover, Chellaston, Sinfin, Duffield, and the wider Derbyshire area. We also accept tools sent by post from further afield — get in touch and we'll advise on the best way to package and send your tools safely.
My tool isn't listed — can you still sharpen it?
Quite possibly. We're happy to look at garden tools not listed here — things like edging irons, grass shears, draw hoes, and more. Send us a photo on WhatsApp and we'll let you know whether we can help and give you a quote.
